Since 2021, the Fluidra Foundation, in collaboration with Fluidra, Obra Social Sant Joan de Déu, and Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu, has been conducting research on the effects of aquatic physical activity on mental health. With the renewal of this partnership until 2027, the program moves into a new phase, reinforcing scientific evidence on the benefits of pool-based sports for individuals with severe mental disorders and depression.

The research on the benefits of aquatic exercise expands with new centers and a clinical trial

The first phase of the project, completed in 2023, confirmed that regular aquatic exercise significantly improves self-esteem, emotional well-being, and social integration. Based on these findings, the program will now expand its scope by increasing the number of beneficiaries to 350 individuals with psychiatric disorders, incorporating twelve additional healthcare centers across Spain, including locations in Seville, Santander, and Mallorca, and launching an innovative clinical trial assessing the combined impact of aquatic exercise and Metacognitive Training for people with depression.

According to Xavi Servat, manager of Fundació Fluidra, "It has been proven that exercising in water not only improves physical condition but also positively impacts self-esteem, emotional well-being, and social integration. With this renewal, we aim to consolidate an evidence-based intervention model and contribute to improving the mental health of the most vulnerable people through innovative and accessible therapies".

A key aspect of the project is ensuring accessibility to aquatic activities for individuals with mental health conditions. Developed within a network of municipal sports centers in Barcelona, the initiative offers guided group sessions, mixed activities with the community, and free access to pools with personalized support. To eliminate financial barriers, the program also provides assistance for purchasing sports equipment and covering transportation costs.

Backed by the Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute, this initiative follows a rigorous scientific approach, ensuring structured monitoring of research findings. The goal is to establish an evidence-based intervention model that promotes the integration of aquatic exercise as a therapeutic tool within mental healthcare services.

With a EUR260,000 budget allocated for pool activities, research, and data analysis, the Fluidra Foundation, Fluidra, and its partners reaffirm their commitment to social innovation and mental well-being.
