Chris Hayes, Managing Director of the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF), provides Eurospapoolnews readers with a comprehensive update on developments in the UK wet leisure sector over the past year.
Innovation, sustainability and skills shaping the future of the UK pool and wellness market
As it moves into 2026, the UK wet leisure industry is adapting to environmental and economic challenges while responding to strong consumer interest in wellbeing and lifestyle-focused solutions. Innovation, sustainability, high standards, and workforce development are at the heart of the sector's strategy for future growth.
Adapting to change
The UK wet leisure industry enters 2026 at a pivotal moment. In the aftermath of a year marked by environmental challenges, economic pressures, and rapid technological advancement, the sector has demonstrated resilience and adaptability. From swimming pools and spas to hot tubs and wellness facilities, these products are no longer seen as luxury items; they are integral to health, well-being, and lifestyle. As we look ahead, the industry faces both opportunities and responsibilities: to innovate, to educate, and to lead on sustainability.
Consumer interest in health and well-being continues to shape the market. Swimming pools, spas, wellness, hot tubs, and cold-water therapy spas are increasingly viewed as essentials for lifestyle, promoting physical health, mental well-being, and social connection. However, 2025's prolonged sunshine and limited rainfall led to Temporary Use Bans (TUBs) or more commonly called 'hosepipe bans', in several regions across the UK.
The BSPF had worked closely with water companies to ensure proportionate guidance was revised in the Drought Management Code of Practice, a strategy that will remain vital on a more regular basis. Thankfully, with the heavy rainfall experienced in the last part of 2025, only one water company still requires a TUB to be in place. Economic factors also play a role. While premium installations remain strong, there is growing demand for affordable, energy-efficient solutions.

Standards and guidance: raising the bar
SPATA (Swimming Pool & Allied Trades Association) and BISHTA (British & Irish Spa & Hot Tub Association) have released updated 2026 Standards that reinforce best practice in design, installation, and maintenance. These updates reflect evolving technical requirements and safety expectations, ensuring members deliver excellence. BISHTA is proud to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2026, marking a quarter-century of promoting safe hot tub standards across the UK. Cold water immersion continues to gain traction. BISHTA's guidance, developed with Coventry University, provides essential advice for domestic settings and supports businesses entering this emerging market.
Technology and innovation: driving efficiency
Automation, app-controlled water monitoring, and advanced energy management tools have moved from being niche innovations to becoming mainstream essentials, offering consumers unprecedented convenience, improved safety, and significant cost savings.
These technologies empower owners to maintain optimal water quality and energy efficiency with minimal effort, often from the palm of their hand. Meanwhile, artificial intelligence and data-driven solutions are reshaping operational strategies across the industry. Predictive maintenance powered by AI can anticipate equipment issues before they occur, reducing downtime and extending product lifespan. At the same time, intelligent energy optimisation systems help businesses and consumers lower consumption and environmental impact.
Innovation is not just a trend; it is the cornerstone of our industry's future. By embracing AI and smart technologies, we can elevate customer experiences, streamline operations, and contribute to sustainability goals. Every year, leading companies from across the wet leisure sector choose SPATEX as the platform to unveil their latest breakthroughs, and 2026 promises to be no exception, with cutting-edge solutions set to inspire and transform the market.

Collaboration and partnerships: strengthening the network
The BSPF continues to champion collaboration. Work has resumed on the Domestic Pool Maintenance qualification, developed with ISPE (the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers), with a pilot course scheduled for 2026. Partnerships with STA (Swimming Teachers Association) remain strong, supporting the development of swim schools and commercial pool projects. Internationally, the BSPF's engagement with EUSA (the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations) and WAPSA (the World Alliance of Pool and Spa Associations) ensures UK businesses benefit from global insights and benchmarking, with a huge focus on Education, Environment, Market Data & Safety, and Marketing.
Sustainability: a core commitment
Environmental responsibility has become a cornerstone of the UK wet leisure industry. Solutions such as heat pumps, solar energy systems, and advanced insulation are increasingly standard, reflecting the sector's commitment to sustainability.
Outgoing BSPF President Dyfed Thompson-Smith reaffirmed this focus during his tenure, stating: "Our commitment to sustainability is unwavering. We aim to set benchmarks that not only meet current regulations but anticipate future requirements."
On 3rd February 2026, at the UK's annual Wet Leisure Industry Gala Evening during SPATEX at the Coventry Building Society Arena in the West Midlands, Dyfed will formally hand over the presidency to Dorian Davies. While Dyfed remains on the BSPF board to continue championing environmental initiatives, Dorian will bring his own vision and priorities to the role, ensuring sustainability remains central to the Federation's long-term strategy.

Training and workforce development
Skills development is a critical priority for 2026, and the BSPF is working closely with SPATA and BISHTA to deliver comprehensive training programmes that address the industry's evolving needs. Both associations offer a wide range of courses designed to enhance technical expertise and operational knowledge.
Workforce diversity remains a key focus, with initiatives to encourage participation from underrepresented groups. By combining technical excellence with inclusive recruitment strategies, the BSPF and its member associations are building a skilled, diverse workforce ready to meet the challenges of the future.
Equality, diversity and inclusion: building an inclusive industry
The BSPF's EDI working group continues to make significant progress, with a dedicated policy adopted by SPATA and BISHTA to embed inclusivity across the sector. A pilot training programme launched last year will expand this year, equipping businesses with practical tools to foster inclusive workplaces and attract diverse talent.
To further support these initiatives, the BSPF has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for EDI training resources and outreach projects. This campaign provides an opportunity for industry professionals and stakeholders to contribute directly to creating a more equitable and welcoming environment within the wet leisure sector. Every donation helps to develop educational materials, deliver workshops, and support underrepresented groups in accessing career opportunities.
By combining policy, training, and community-driven funding, the BSPF is ensuring that equality, diversity, and inclusion remain central to the industry's growth and innovation.

Awards and recognition: celebrating excellence
The 2026 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards take place at the annual UK Wet Leisure Industry Gala Evening held during SPATEX on 3rd February. These awards remain the pinnacle of industry achievement, recognising excellence in construction, installation, innovation, design, retail, and service. The event is renowned for bringing together the best and brightest in the pool and hot tub industry and showcasing innovative products, services, and industry advancements. The awards honour achievements across various categories, recognising businesses that have consistently upheld rigorous British and European standards while setting benchmarks for quality and ethical practices in the industry.

Winners are also eligible to be shortlisted for entry to the European Pool & Spa Awards, hosted by EUSA. What makes the EUSA Awards truly unique is their elite selection process; only the "best of the best" projects are considered. National associations typically nominate winners from their own pool, spa, and hot tub competitions, ensuring that entries represent the highest standards in the wet leisure industry.
Spatex 2026: education and engagement
SPATEX remains the UK's leading wet leisure exhibition, offering unparalleled networking and learning opportunities. This year is a bigger, bolder SPATEX, as the industry is celebrating its 30th anniversary edition.
