Fundació Fluidra has started construction of a semi-Olympic swimming pool in Homa Bay, Kenya, to enable children and young people in the region to learn to swim in a safe environment. The project is being developed in collaboration with La Salle School Homabay.
The future facility, measuring 25 x 12.5 m, has been designed as an educational space. Its main objective will be to provide swimming and water safety training for children in a region closely connected to water through its proximity to Lake Victoria.
An educational project focused on water safety
Located on the shores of Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa, Homa Bay is an area where water plays a central role in the social and economic life of many families. However, daily contact with water is not always accompanied by sufficient swimming skills or awareness of drowning prevention.
According to the World Health Organization, drowning is the fourth leading cause of death among children aged 1 to 4 and the third among children aged 5 to 14. The WHO also states that 92% of drowning deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
"In Homa Bay, water is part of everyday life. Lake Victoria is very close, and many families have lived alongside it from birth. That is why this pool aims to be much more than a facility. It aspires to become a place where children can learn, gain confidence and relate to water more safely, but also a meeting point and community space around the pool. Knowing how to swim goes beyond an educational or sporting activity; it is a tool for protection," explains Xavi Servat, Director of Fundació Fluidra.

Construction work on the semi-Olympic pool at La Salle School Homabay in Kenya
This project in Kenya continues the initiatives already led by Fundació Fluidra around the pool as an educational, community and preventive space. In Senegal, the foundation built a pool in 2023 for the children of the Piarist Schools of West Africa, which is now open to the community and hosts swimming lessons and other aquatic activities. In South Africa, it is also involved in a project featuring a pool installed in a recycled container, designed to move between different communities and facilitate access to swimming lessons for children.
Created in 2016, Fundació Fluidra channels the social commitment of Fluidra, a global player in equipment and connected solutions for pools and wellness. Through charitable projects and collaborations with social organisations, the foundation works in particular with vulnerable groups to promote access to swimming, aquatic therapies and the benefits of water.
